5 Ideas for Pretty Outdoor Spaces Even Us Non-Green Thumbers Can Do

My poor plants - my treatment of them borders on complete neglect. They are very hardy plants that I almost kill on a monthly, if not weekly, basis. And while I enjoy being outside and seeing the pretty flowers and trees; how to plant, where to plant, and what to do alludes me. My sister and my mom both have green thumbs. They love gardens, plants, and all things related. Me - not so much.

Anywho... There was a question posted on a website about how to add some inexpensive outdoor appeal to a smallish outdoor space. So I did what I do - researched ideas on the internet. As always, there were great ideas.

So I compiled what I think are basics for great outdoor spaces that even I could pull off.

1. Keep it simple.

My favorite saying. It applies to so many things in life. Do yourself a favor and don't over do it. Less is more. Enough said on this I think. :)

2. Pots are key.

If you're landscape-challenged, pots are easier to manage - though you will need to water. You can find many pots already put together at your local garden center - or they can help you figure out the best plants to use for your space (shaded, sunny, etc).

3. Treat it like an indoor room.

A lot has been made about your outdoor spaces becoming an extension of your home. So treat it just like you would any room in your house. Comfortable sitting or dining areas with tables, chairs, rug, etc.

4. Don't spend a fortune - and take care of your purchases.

HomeGoods and large box stores have lots of great deals on outdoor decor. Spend a bit more on the bigger pieces, but don't go crazy. There are lots of fun tables and accessories that will see you through. Also, putting your smaller items, umbrellas and soft pieces away when not in use or when the weather turns will help you keep your items longer. Just because they are for outdoor use doesn't mean they are indestructible. And while it's cute to have indoor chairs outside, do it only if you are going to take them in because they won't last through moisture, etc.

5. Remember lighting.

I love solar lights. While they don't light up as much, they don't cost a fortune. Plus, they give your garden a pretty glow. You can add some candles (especially if you have mosquito issues) and the ambience will be perfect for spending a quiet summer night enjoying your outdoor space.

Simple enough, right? Gosh, I wish it was warmer today cause I'm ready to spend some time outdoors. Those twinkly fairy lights were my favorite. They are on order right now. What do you think? Can you handle sprucing up your outdoor space? I think you can. And when you do, show me some pictures. I would love to see what you come up with.
