Spring! Tips to De-Winterize Your Home

Ahh spring. Seems like the season takes it’s time getting here - especially this year. It's still chilly out, but the skies are deep blue and the sun is shining so I'll take it!

We all know that with spring we can finally start replacing all of the heavy fabrics and darker colors in our wardrobe with delicate whites, light neutrals and bright colors. It's time to do the same with your house - and it's so easy!

To freshen up your home for spring you don’t have to spend a lot of money or time. Here are some suggestions:

1. Replace anything that's dark and wintery with brighter, happier colors. I'm not suggesting you paint your walls or replace your furniture. But look around you. Do you have cozy, warm blankets on your sofa? Try getting a lighter, more colorful quilt. Dark artwork? Replace with something lighter and brighter. Pillows, lampshades and knick-knacks? All those items will improve the freshness of your space.

2. Embrace fashion trends in your home. Take a queue from the new spring fashions, or look outside your windows and bring the colors and patterns in your home through new soft accessories. Floral patterns and lace fabrics, nautical themes in light cottons, neon silks and chiffons and black and white linens, pillows, throws and window coverings will lighten up darker and/or neutral space. Or add bright floral patterns to your dark stripes and plaids. You can achieve all of this with inexpensive fabrics and sheets. And if you are like me and can't sew, you can use fabric tape and glue and grosgrain ribbons to cover up uneven edges. Also, make the move from ceramic to crystal and glass, either contemporary or traditional in your harder accessories. It brings sparkle to a room.

3. Bring the outdoors in. Of course bringing in beautiful plants and flowers will cheer up any space. But you can take it even further. Replace a heavy wing-back chair with a rattan or wicker piece. Bring inside garden accessories too. Pots and garden statues add an additional element of texture and makes rooms seem more interesting.

4. Lighten up! Just like shedding layers of clothing, eliminating some of the clutter you’ve collected over the holidays and winter seasons can improve the feel and flow of your rooms. Empty out some of your bookshelves and/or turn your spines in. De-clutter your mantels. Everything should be clean and refreshed, light and tranquil. And repurpose your own pieces by moving them around. A stool can be an end table and an ottoman can be a coffee table. Shop around your home. Just moving pieces around will bring in new energy into your spaces.

Without spending too much money, you can give a fresh, spring look to your home. What a lovely thought. Now go enjoy the sunshine! :)
